BEST FIRST TREATMENT FOR HIP AND KNEE ARTHRITIS
GLA:D®, or Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark, is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
WHAT DOES GLA:D® INVOLVE?
Our Physios’ undertake extensive specialised training to be able to offer the GLA:D program to clients. The program involves:
An initial assessment with a GLA:D trained physio to determine eligibility for the program and collect baseline data on your current functional ability
Two education sessions teaching you about Osteoarthritis, how the GLA:D Australia program works, and what the evidence shows regarding the best treatment of osteoarthritis. These sessions are free at Croydon Physio!
Small group neuromuscular training sessions twice a week for six weeks (total of 12 x 1-hour sessions)
Croydon Physio will give you a FREE PACK with all the equipment you will use and user manual with all the information you need.
GLA:D® AUSTRALIA TRAINING CONSISTS OF:
A first appointment explaining the program and collecting data on your current functional ability
Two, 60 minute education sessions where we teach you about OA, how the GLA:D™ Australia exercises improve joint stability, how to retain this improved joint stability outside of the program and potentially avoid surgery.
Group neuromuscular training sessions twice a week for six weeks to improve muscle control of the joint which leads to reduction in symptoms and improved quality of life
You do not need a referral from you Doctor, however you may be eligible for a rebate from Medicare for some of the cost of the program, if deemed appropriate by your GP.
CAN I PARTICIPATE IN GLA:D® AUSTRALIA?
GLA:D® Australia is a program for all individuals who experience any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity. You may participate in the GLA:D® Australia program if you have a hip or knee joint problem that resulted in visiting a health care provider.
OA TREATMENT IN AUSTRALIA
OA is the most common lifestyle disease in individuals 65 year of age and older, but can also affect individuals as young as 30 years of age.
Current national and international clinical guidelines recommend patient education, exercise and weight loss as first line treatment for osteoarthritis.
In Australia, treatment usually focuses on surgery and the GLA:D® Australia program offers a safe alternative that may avoid the need for surgery.
WHAT MAKES GLA:D DIFFERENT?
It's an internationally recognised program that can only be administered by qualified physios
It has been proven to reduce symptom progression by 32 per cent
Participants are reporting less pain, improved function, improved quality of life, reduced rates of sick leave, and a reduced need for pain killers. In fact, 1 in 3 people stopped pain killers altogether after participating in the GLA:D program.
Additionally, GLA:D reduces/delays the need for surgical interventions.
IS A GP REFERRAL REQUIRED?
You do not need a GP referral to participate in GLA:D, however if you are eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan (formerly known as EPC plan) you may use this for your initial assessment.
CAN I CLAIM THIS SERVICE AS AN EXTRA ON MY HEALTH INSURANCE?
These sessions may be claimed on private health insurance depending on your level of cover, please check with your private health insurance provider.
